Summary - September [October 01, 2006 @ 11:03am]

I can't believe how quickly September has gone.

justrefresh is officially one month old and has a troop of 11 members.

A quick summary of what was discussed at REFRESH over the month.

Drink Recipes

I'm also interested in hearing what makes you all happy. If you have any subject you wish to discuss, DO NOT HESITATE to post it.

Ponderings - Talents [September 29, 2006 @ 11:32am]

We all like to feel good about our special talents.

Share you talents here with us.

Do you write? Do you draw? Can you kick butt in a certain computer game? Do you have the healing touch? Can you sing or write music? Can you leap tall buildings in a single bound? Do you have an exceptional IQ? Can you crack codes?

Whatever you're good at, we want to hear. SO PIMP YOURSELF. Pictures and promotions of self made sites are welcomed.

In fact, if you can think of movies/books or quotes using the word "talent" or implying someone with an exceptional talent place it here.

For example. The Talented Mr. Ripley.

Ponderings - Information [September 27, 2006 @ 12:22pm]

Hands up if you like science.

Hands up if the latest science news, research tidbits and science discussion's make you go weak at the neurons.

Well, I've found this quaint site called Science a GoGo.

For some of us, our mind is like a giant sponge. It aches for constant stimulation and drools at any opportunity to mop up any juicy tenderloin of scientific musing. For others, science is just a whole heap of gobblty gook.

I like learning things. Let me rephrase that. I LOVE learning new things. I am happy when I'm am exploring avenues that I've never even envisaged or fathomed. It may be science, it may be the creative arts, it may be music, yet the search for new and exciting avenues of information never fails to cease.

Being the natural curiousity thrill seeker I ventured to the "Curiousity Store". Low and behold I found the "Albert Einstein Action Figure". Not exactly you Buzz Lightyear or Spiderman but whoah! Who would have thought E=MC2 would actually equate to "he of most action figureness?" The action shot pictures of Albert made me giggle. Refresh Here

Come to think of it. That might be a great segment here. I take a pic of some figurines and everyone make up the comments. What do you think?

Promotions - Drink Recipes [September 24, 2006 @ 8:55pm]

I'm not one of an alcohol drinker. In fact, I love the refreshing taste of something fruity and creamy over the screwdriver drilling of a hangover any day.

Many moons ago, I attended college. It was a Business Hospitality course and one of the course modules was "Alcohol Service" or something like that. Naturally we needed to partake (those who were old enough - 18 years in Australia) in the sampling of such beverages so we may "up sell" the tastes to prospective customers.

On many a Friday afternoon did I catch the bus home from class feeling somewhat...Beam me up Scottie!

Apparently, a few glasses of red wine each night is supposed to do wonders for lowering cholesterol levels and other things. Just one glass alone, would have me feeling pretty bloody good about myself let alone wonder "is my cholesterol lowering yet?"

Of course, alcohol in moderation is always a wise move and too many glasses of your most favourite "bevvie" may sneak up on you and hence turning you into;

1. Giggling Nutter
2. Floppy Ragdoll
3. Hotblooded Minx

And so the list goes on.

For those who are of age and for those who are'nt, I've found a groovy "chick" webpage that caters for both cocktails and mocktails (non-alcoholic). There's even history and what not.

I'm feeling pretty parched about now.

Clink glasses here

I'm not normally a fan of purple but I felt "in the zone" here at Drinks Recipe Central. And considering that 100% of justrefresh's members are women, I'm sure you won't be offended by the fizzing effervescence of something cranberry-like with vodka and what ever else.

Tell me which is your favourite "refreshing" drink of choice and the places you like to "chill".

Ponderings - Money [September 22, 2006 @ 9:07pm]

Scenario 1.

You have 3 months to save $500. So you spend the next 3 months working your butt off. The last day rolls over and the $500 is now secured in your bank account.

1. How do you feel?
2. What do you buy or spend the money on? Or what do you do with the money?
3. How did you feel after you made your decision?

Scenario 2.

You spend a few of the last dollars in your account to buy a lottery ticket. Thank your lucky stars you win $500!!

1. How do you feel?
2. What do you buy or spend the money on? Or what do you do with the money?
3. How did you feel after you made your decision?

Scenario 3.

Youve a pretty comfy life. You can buy what you like when you like to a certain degree every now and then. A $500 inheritance suddenly falls upon you.

1. How do you feel?
2. What do you buy or spend the money on? Or what do you do with the money?
3. How did you feel after you made your decision?

Does money buy happiness?

Personally, I believe happiness is about wanting and managing what you already have. And perhaps taking that $500 raise and treating your loved ones to a special night out.

I like this little excerpt.

As the authors of "How to Be Happy, Dammit" say in Life Lesson #40: "It's not 'he who dies with the most toys wins.' It's 'he who has the most time to play with his toys and the most fun playing with them who wins.'"

Ponderings - Pets [September 19, 2006 @ 7:56pm]

Numerous studies have shown that pets, or at least the presence of animals, can have medical benefits that are beyond dispute. These range from lowering blood pressure to lessening anxiety and depression and even to faster healing times after surgery.

I can appreciate that there are people who just aren't pet people. People who are either too busy, allergic, don't want the responsibilty, don't have the space, the money and the list goes on.

Then there are those who love the happy yelps of excitement of a puppy on your return home, the soft padding of a kitten as it attempts to make a cushion of your lap, the gentle tickling of a bird as it fidgits with the strands of your hair or the tickling of its tongue upon your earlobe.

I'm definately a pet keeper. I've never spent a year without having a pet growing up as a child and even now as an adult.

Pet owners have overall better physical health due to exercise with their pets.

Pets decrease feelings of loneliness and isolation in their owners.

Children owning pets are more likely to be involved in sports, hobbies, clubs or even chores.

For what ever the reasons you have a pet, share you most favourite moment with them, your favourite picture, or how having or not having a pet makes you feel.

We don't really understand why pets make us feel better, they just do.

Promotions - LUSH [September 15, 2006 @ 2:47pm]

LUSH is one of my most favourite shops. Though the link provided is an Australian link, Im sure there are world wide LUSH shops.

I had the pleasure of being allured by the intoxicating fragrance of freshly made face creams, bath bombs, soaps, hand creams, shampoos, and the list goes on. What woman wouldnt? I love the idea of "fresh is best" and the fact I know that no radical chemicals have gone into the products Im slapping and lathering on my body.

Even the Capt (my boyfriend) went willingly into the shop.

I could have spent all day, sniffing, touching, rubbing, squeezing and drooling over every product in the store but time was of the essence.

I bought "Crash Course in Skin Care".

A simple but effective, deep cleansing, calming, soothing, special face mask.

Its contents?

Fresh avocado, kaolin, natural yoghurt, glycerine, talc, fresh lemon juice, sandalwood oil, lavender oil, lemongrass oil, chamomile oil and perfume.

Place it in the fridge and keep it cold. After a warm shower, smooth the cool cream onto your face and know that even if you have this product drying on your face, you'll smell like a treat and your skin (after washed off gently with a warm wet cloth) will thank you (and even your boyfriend).

Ponderings - Fears [September 11, 2006 @ 10:02am]

What is fear? What causes it? And why do some people seem fearless, seeking out horror flicks, thrill rides, and extreme sports, whereas other people avoid things that trigger any fear reaction? What can people do to conquer fears?

A fear reaction happens whenever we sense danger or when we're confronted with something new or unknown that seems potentially dangerous. Fear can be brief - like the startled reaction you have if a balloon unexpectedly pops or if you are surprised by something you didn't expect. This is often over in seconds, as soon as the brain gets enough data to realize there's no danger. If the brain doesn't receive the "all clear" signal, fear can last longer and feel more intense.

So what is a topic like "FEAR" doing in a post on REFRESH?

Most people tend to avoid the things they feel afraid of. There are, of course, exceptions. Some people seek out the thrill of extreme sports because the rush of fear can be exciting. We all experience fear slightly differently and with more or less intensity. Some people even like it and find it exciting.

Has there been a time when any of you have felt extreme fear, act on it and embrace it then realised, "Ive just overcome my fear" and felt a sense of relief afterwards?

I get motion sickness, so much so I find it difficult even going on a swing. Although I dont fear having a "pendulum effect" screwing up my balance, heights and a type of vertigo instills a fear. I am fine if Im 50 meters up high but as soon as I begin to move...goodnight the fox. I loose all speech cohesive, dry throat, sweaty hands etc etc..

I climbed a perfectly good wall in a harness on the weekend. Yes, I got to the top of each wall on most occasions and slowly my fear of being at the top then having to lean backward and "entrust" that the rope would keep me safe, lessened.

YAY for me? Id like to think so...one fear down...5 more to go.

Ponderings - Happiness [September 07, 2006 @ 1:57pm]

According to Wikipedia (see resources on sidelink), Happiness is an emotional or affective state that feels good or pleasing. Overlapping states or experiences associated with happiness include wellbeing, joy, sexual pleasure, delight, health, safety, contentment and love, while contrasting ones include suffering, sadness, grief, anxiety, and pain. Happiness is often correlated to the presence of favorable events (such as a promotion, a marriage, lottery winnings etc.) and the absence of troubles or bad luck (such as accidents, getting fired, divorce, conflicts etc.).

So what makes you happy? What pushes your buttons in a good way? What makes you leap over buildings in a single bound? What leaves you screaming in elation?

Abraham Lincoln once said, “People can be just about as happy as they make up their minds to be.

Is happiness just a state of mind? Is happiness just a matter of changing the way we think?

You can’t just decide to be happy any more than you can decide to be taller. That’s because happiness is not a finite entity unto itself, but is the sum of the most important qualities of happiness: love, optimism, courage, a sense of freedom, security, health, spirituality, altruism, perspective, humor, and purpose. These are the things you should make up your mind to achieve. (excerpt taken from Taking action to live a happy lifestyle)

If you feel happy you should smile. Put a smile on your face, even when you don’t feel like smiling, and pretty soon that smile seeps inside and cheers you up. It's usually the first thing people notice when they meet you for the first time.

English essayist Joseph Addison said, “What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. They are but trifles, to be sure, but, scattered along life’s pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.

SO SMILE. It wont do anyone any harm.

Promotions - Priceless Love Cheques [September 05, 2006 @ 9:35pm]

Feeling a little "routine" in your relationship or wanting to add that little bit more? Then try Love Cheques.

Courtesy of the Bank of Love, Priceless Love Cheques are written just like traditional cheques. Rather than payee receiving money, they receive pleasurable pampering by the payer.

One cheque might have a value of "I promise you a full body massage" or "I promise not to nag you this weekend" or "I promise to make you breakfast in bed" or "I promise to give you a loving blowjob".

You date the cheque as per the intended date of the action, write your lover's name on the "TO" section and quietly slip the folded cheque into their shirt, coat, pants, wallet pocket where they will find it later.

Imagine their surprise!

Ponderings - Seasons [September 04, 2006 @ 1:23pm]

It's officially Spring in Australia.

Because Australia is such a large country, its weather varies significantly in different parts of the continent. Living in Australia can involve everything from sunbathing on the beach in scorching summers to knocking snow off your boots after a day of skiing and from sweating out the humidity during the build-up at the beginning of the wet season, to wrapping up snug and waiting at the bus stop in the pouring rain.

Excerpt taken from Australian Weather and the Seasons.

So how does someone prepare for Spring in Australia?

When someone mentions "Spring" to me, I immediately think of little newborn lambs frolicking about in a lush green pasture. I also think, "does this mean I have to show my fluroescent white skin to unsuspecting eyes?" Spring is like watching people peel off a layer of clothes and into their swim wear and go swimming at the local beaches. It is also a time to rethink "oh its that time to wax again."

For those of you not living in Australia and those who are, how does the turn of a season effect you?
